The journey to Antarctica now has a new address in southern Chile. Silversea has opened The Cormorant at 55 South, a 150-room hotel in Puerto Williams designed around the arrival of guests joining its Antarctica Fly Cruise expeditions.
The opening ceremony took place on November 5, 2026, according to the company’s November 6 announcement. Developed with Chilean investors, the property brings accommodation into the same journey as Silversea’s charter flights and expedition ships. The brand describes it as the southernmost hotel on Earth.
A more considered departure
Silversea says every guest on its Antarctica Fly Cruise programme will arrive in Puerto Williams by branded charter flight and stay at The Cormorant before continuing south. The significance is practical: the hotel becomes part of the expedition’s preparation, rather than simply a room booked before embarkation.
In its opening-week report, The Points Guy describes guests checking polar clothing, completing biosecurity preparations and attending an Antarctic briefing at the property. It also reports that the hotel offers a place to wait when weather disrupts flights. Comfort can improve that wait; it cannot remove the uncertainty of travelling to a polar destination.
Patagonia before the peninsula
The hotel also gives the journey a local setting. Silversea’s season announcement describes kayaking on the Beagle Channel, guided walks on Navarino Island and horseback excursions with a local wilderness guide. Latitude 55 focuses on Patagonian flavours, while Bar Sur offers Chilean wines and cocktails made with regional ingredients.
For travellers, that creates an opportunity to treat southern Chile as part of the experience rather than a transit point. Activities and arrangements should still be checked against the specific voyage and conditions at the time.
What to check before booking
A fly-cruise and a voyage that sails the Drake Passage offer different journeys. Review the exact route, hotel nights, flight arrangements, inclusions and disruption terms before comparing prices. Ask how weather delays are handled and which costs your travel insurance covers.
The Cormorant’s opening is a useful development for travellers who value a coordinated start to an expedition. Its promise is a more comfortable transition from arrival to adventure, with Patagonia given time and attention before Antarctica comes into view.
